La Porte dentist discusses tips for a healthy smile.Maintaining your dental health is vital to protecting the appearance and longevity of your smile. However, with more research connecting the state of your teeth and gums to your overall health, you now have another reason to do everything you can to be proactive about your oral hygiene. To do so, it involves more than just brushing and flossing. You must be committed to prevent dental complications at home and with your La Porte dentist. At Region Dental, we value your well-being. We have the information you need to protect your oral and overall health.

1. Brush Twice a Day

Your toothbrush is your first line of defense to prevent dental problems as it removes plaque, tartar, and food particles from the teeth. You need to brush twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste. Hold it at a 45-degree angle and clean all the surfaces of the teeth for at least two minutes. Do not brush too aggressively or you will cause damage to the gums and enamel.

2. Floss Daily

A toothbrush cannot clean the gum line or in between the teeth. Only floss can reach these areas. Use a dental floss that is supported by the American Dental Association to remove plaque and tartar buildup each day to prevent gum disease. Insert the floss between two teeth and form a ā€œCā€ shape around a tooth. Gently slide it to the gum line and back up to the crown of the tooth.

3. Visit Your Dentist Twice a Year

Just as brushing and flossing are an important part of prevention, so is visiting the dentist regularly. The American Dental Association recommends everyone schedules an appointment every six months for a cleaning and checkup. By doing so, you will stop dental problems before they even have a chance to develop.

4. Avoid Damaging Foods and Drinks

The foods and drinks you consume can either hurt or help your dental health. To prevent tooth decay, avoid those that contain high amounts of sugar and acid, like soda and candy. Protect the appearance of your teeth by limiting contact with those that are known to cause stains, like coffee and berries. Instead, eat a well-balanced diet to promote the health of your teeth and gums, like fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products.

5. Promote Your Gum Health

It is estimated that 50% of adults have a form of periodontal disease, an infection in the gum tissue. Home oral hygiene habits and regular care from your dentist are vital to reducing your risk. However, there are additional factors that can lead to poor gum health, like smoking. Stop any bad habits that can negatively impact your gums.
