An examination with the dentist. Most of us understand the importance of taking care of our teeth. They allow us chew and enjoy our food. However, they are not the only thing in our mouths we should be monitoring, and that’s where your dentist in La Porte can help with consistent examinations every six-months. Here are some of the other parts of your mouth that need care and attention.

Oral Mucosa

The oral mucosa is a protective mucous membrane that covers everything in your mouth except your teeth. This is similar to the membrane you’ll find in your ear or nostrils. The oral mucosa is your number one defense against germs or other things that can irritate your mouth.

Gums

Like a house has a firm foundation, your gums are the foundation for your teeth. They are also protected by the oral mucosa. Taking good care of your gums with daily brushing and flossing is just as important as taking care of your teeth. Healthy gums are pink and firm, and they don’t bleed when you brush.

If you don’t take good care of your gums with an excellent home care routine and regular dental checkups, you are at risk for developing periodontal (gum) disease. Gum disease is essentially an infection in your gums and bone, and it is very prevalent in American adults. It’s also the number one cause of tooth loss.

Upper and Lower Jaw

Your jaw joint is one of the most complex hinges in your body. It is capable of moving forward, backward,  and side-to-side. Your jaw helps give your face its shape, and its function allows you to talk and chew your food among other movements. If your jaw joint is not functioning properly, you may experience facial pain, headaches, and other issues.

The Tongue

Your tongue is the strong muscle that resides inside your mouth and helps move food around contributing to your digestive process. Your tongue allows you to taste and enjoy your food, as well as helps you form words and talk.

Salivary Glands

These essential glands produce the saliva that helps you begin the digestion process. Saliva breaks down your food and also helps to wash away food particles and neutralize the acids in your mouth, which protects against tooth decay.
