Missing teeth affect more than just your oral health – it affects your self-esteem too. It can make you feel self-conscious every time you laugh, speak, or eat. Fortunately, you don’t have to live that way forever. Dentures can restore your smile and help you get back to enjoying life the way you used to! But before you can sport your new pearly whites, there’s a bit of a process you have to go through first. Read on as your dentist in La Porte breaks down the procedure to give you an idea of how long it takes to get dentures.

Dental Examination

First, your dentist will perform a thorough examination to assess your teeth and the current state of your oral health. They’ll search for any concerning oral health problems, such as infection, tooth decay, or previous dental work, as these issues can interfere with the denture process. During this appointment, they’ll use their findings to give you an estimated timeframe for the procedure. If you need dental work before dentures, you can expect to have more appointments than anticipated.

Tooth Extraction

If you need to have teeth extracted, the denture process will take longer as the extraction sites will need time to heal. Depending on the size of the site and the patient’s health, the healing process can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. However, once fully healed, your dentist can continue the process and begin making your dentures.

Making the Dentures

Once you’re given the green light for dentures, your dentist will take impressions and measurements of your teeth to begin making them. They might also create a wax mockup of the prosthetic teeth to ensure the dentures will fit properly. Your dentist will send this model to the lab so they can build your final prosthetics using the specifications.

Fitting the Dentures

After the dentures are created, you will return to the clinic for a fitting. These adjustment appointments are necessary to ensure the dentures fit without pain or issue. Perfecting the fit and making sure the teeth are the right length and width is critical as it can affect your appearance.

Placing the Dentures

Once your dentist has finished all final adjustments, the complete dentures will be placed in your mouth. It’s worth noting that while you shouldn’t feel discomfort, it will take a while for you to adapt to your new prosthetics. Your mouth will have to get used to wearing, eating, and speaking with them. But once you get past the adjustment period, you will have the same function and control as regular teeth!
